Home / Introduction / Gershom Prince Powder Horn
1761
Gershom Prince actively fought for the freedom of countless people he did not know, yet died before he could see the fruit of this labor. A Black soldier in the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War, Prince carried this powder horn during his service to the American colonies and the United States. Inscribed on the horn is his name, elaborate decoration, and the date “1761.” He documented his participation in independence by carving this horn. Prince fought in the Battles of Germantown, Brandywine, and, finally, Wyoming, where he and the horn were unfortunately separated by fatal wounds in battle with British soldiers.
